Tony Romo = Don Meridith?

In the wake of the Dallas Cowboys awful showing in Philly last Sunday I read an article written by Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Part of it states this about the Cowboys QB, Tony Romo:

Here’s the exact transcript of Romo’s response when someone asked him how he dealt with such a devastating loss. It made me proud of him ... and it made me flinch, too.

"I wake up tomorrow and keep living. You don’t [deal with it]. You just keep playing the game. It’s a fun game, and it’s enjoyable. We’re going to try to win next year. We’re going to try to get back in the playoffs, and we’re going to try to win a Super Bowl.

"If you don’t, OK. If you do, OK. Then you’re really a great player. If you don’t, you’re just a solid, good player, and I’ll have to deal with that, not you guys. That’s just part of the job.

"I’ve had a lot worse things happen to me than a loss in a sporting event, that’s for sure. If this is the worst thing that ever happens to me, then I’ll have lived a pretty good life."

In other words, folks, it’s just a game, not life or death, and he’s right. It’s a mature, grown-up philosophy, an attempt to try to put it all back into some semblance of proper perspective.

Only one problem. As much as I agree with Tony Boy’s candor and admire his willingness to state his life philosophy out loud, I seriously doubt that Cowboys fans were looking for rational perspective from their quarterback at that point.

They wanted heartbreak. They wanted pathos. They wanted their quarterback to stand there and tell them how bad he felt, how he would do anything in the world to change things if he could.

While I suspect that Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman both share Romo’s overall philosophy on life and games, I don’t think any of us ever heard either of them shrug and say after a gut-wrenching, heartbreaking loss, "Hey, too bad, but the sun will come up tomorrow."

For most Cowboys fans, the sun won’t come up again for many, many months.

They want their quarterback to not just understand their despair, but to share in it, not stand there with that smug, I-get-it-and-you-don’t half-smile, in that goofy-looking hat and tell them that things aren’t really so bad after all and that they could be a whole lot worse.

The season just ended in ignominy and disgrace, for crying out loud. Act like it. Don’t stand there offering homilies and life lessons, as sincere as they may be. For most Cowboys fans, it was the worst day of a truly horrible year.

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Reeves, and after reading Romo's quote I couldn't help but think if he wasn't like another Cowboys QB who could never quite get the job done. Who by some reports had a somewhat laze fair attitude toward the game...Don Meridith. Now I am too young to have been around for those days but the stories I have heard about the Cowboys QB from the 60's sound in some respects a lot like the stories you hear about Romo.

Forgetting all of that for a moment...yes you are playing a game and a lot worse things can happen to you than loosing a football game...but it is your job. It is your job to win football games. If you don't win at least act like it bothers you so the people who pay your salary might actually believe that you give two shits about what you're getting paid outrageous amounts of money to do. As much as TO acts like a spoiled brat...at least you know he cares about something...it may only be himself but at least he cares enough to try and do something to help himself.

Hey, Romo may go home and work his ass off trying to figure out how to win it all next year, I don't know what he does. But someone needs to tell him that perception is reality and if you want to act like getting drummed on Sunday is no big deal then maybe people won't think it's a big deal to come to the games or buy your overpriced crap anymore.

People in Texas are raised on football. I started playing organized football when I was eight years old, I quit in Junior High because I got tired to getting the crap knocked out of me...but suffice to say that for a lot of people in Texas football in nothing short of a religion. That is why I find the remarks after the game on Sunday by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Wade Phillips kinda funny.

Phillips grew testy following a line of questioning about how the Cowboys "stunk" the rest of the game after taking a 17-0 second-quarter lead.

Phillips walked away from the podium after the news conference and was overheard saying "you stink" in the direction of the columnist who had asked the question.

Phillips later said he was just reciting the words that were thrown at him and not aiming them at anybody in particular.

Come on Wade, you grew up around here try that stuff on someone who will actually buy it. People in Dallas know your team is better than that, you've told them that. People in Dallas know sloppy play when they see it. Don't try to turn it around and blame the messenger.

And then there's Romo...

Asked about his growing habit of committing turnovers, Romo said, "I am pretty sure we won the game.

"It’s not always the prettiest win. But we did win. I am sorry that I am not sorry that we won."

Romo also blamed the local media for nitpicking too much and holding the Cowboys to Super Bowl standards in September.

Boo freckin hoo Tony, you play for the Dallas Cowboys expectations run high. In the 70's and 80's they had a run of playoff appearances longer than your career. Ask Don Meridith, Craig Morton, Roger Staubach, Danny White and Troy Aikman about expectations.

People in Texas aren't football ignorant and when the quarterback does some of the things Romo has done they are going to ask questions.

He was directly responsible for the Bengals getting back into that game on Sunday and he doesn't expect people to ask about his performance?

Sorry you're not the king Tony...get used to it.

It occurs to me that what these guys are seeking is unconditional love...that is what your families are for. We the viewing public, the people who buy tickets, who purchase gear and all other assorted Dallas Cowboys paraphernalia are your extended bosses. If you don't succeed you will be fired. What people see and what bothers them is a pattern of under-performance. To expect unconditional love when you are underperforming, especially when you have a recent history of under-performance when it's all on the line is troubling to say the least. So Mr. Romo, get back to work and STFU.

Someone Has Been Drinking Their Own Bathwater

Over on Blackfive the "Paratrooper of Love" has a wondiferous post about the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders entertaining the troops in Iraq.

Now if we could only keep Donovan healthy.....Glad to see my team supporting the troops. Showing some of that "City of Brotherly Love" spirit right there.

Yeah, the same "Brotherly Love" spirit that booed Santa Claus one year at an Eagles game. Don't get me wrong these ladies deserve to be thanked for what they have done and continue to do for the troops...but!!

Yes as always it's about them. There is nobody that should be able to watch the Dallas Cowboy or Philadelphia Eagle cheerleaders because they have to sit at home and wait...and if you didn't know this...I sure didn't, don't know how I missed this one...apparently these girls are somehow making their husbands unfaithful during their deployment. Such is the attraction and charm of these women that men can no longer control their urges and storm the stage (not filmed of course) and have their way with these women and every other female available after the show.

Good fucking grief.

I was raised a Cowboys fan. Watched Staubach throw the "Hail Mary" pass in Minnesota. Have seen every Super Bowl appearance. Hate Jerry Jones. Love the Cheerleaders. But even after all of that, I can appreciate the humor in this video.

The Dallas Cowboys may be a few years from their last Super Bowl, but they are the favorite football team among adults who follow professional football, rising one spot since last year. Since this survey began in 1998, the Cowboys have always been in one of the top four positions, usually in the top two.

I used to subscribe the Dallas Cowboys Newsletter, had Cowboys gear, stickers etc. I've been to Texas Stadium many times over the years...but since Jerry Jones took over the team it's hard for me to get excited about them, knowing some low life classless idiot from Arkansas will benefit from any good my once beloved team will do...it's a sad situation. Seeing that grinning jackass on Papa John's commercials before I came to Iraq a year ago was about enough to make me wreck a perfectly good TV. It's somewhat amazing to me that people still care enough about the Cowboys to rank them number one.

I guess everyone isn't as turned off by baboons in blue blazers as much as I am...which I guess is a good thing for Jerry Jones.

Are You Ready For The Football?

I know a lot of people don't care for the Dallas Cowboys...like I give a fat rat's ass.

Sundays and sometimes Mondays in the fall during my childhood meant watching Coach Landry's team or getting ready to watch Coach Landry's team play. Those were the days you could be really proud to say you were a fan of the Cowboys...were it true today.

I'll still watch, but it doesn't hold the passion for me that it once did...maybe I just grew up. This video is a trip down memory lane...
